A mischievous raccoon mascot for an organic cannabis grow brand

Organic nutrients designed for plants grown indoors at night. Nocturnal Grow is a Colorado-based brand focused on organic plant nutrition for indoor cultivation. Instead of chemical boosters, the products rely on natural ingredients designed to support stronger roots and healthier plants.

The goal was to create a bold visual identity that stands out in the cannabis grower scene while balancing playfulness with strong graphic structure. Rather than relying on obvious cannabis imagery, the identity centers around a distinctive character that captures the brand’s personality.

Concept

Cannabis grow culture often sits somewhere between underground humor and technical precision. The identity embraces that contrast.

On one side: playfulness, personality, and attitude.
On the other: clear structure, bold graphics, and a visual system designed to feel premium and product-ready.

Instead of leaning into typical cannabis visuals, the brand builds its identity around a mischievous nocturnal character – creating something memorable without becoming cliché.

The Character

At the center of the identity is a raccoon mascot.

The raccoon concept itself came from the client brief, representing the nocturnal nature of growers who tend to their plants late at night. A key requirement was a slightly mischievous expression, giving the character personality and attitude.

The character was refined into a bold graphic mark. Its jagged outer silhouette references the edge structure of a cannabis leaf, translating a familiar plant form into a unique graphic language.

Additional details reinforce the character:
• glowing red eyes suggesting a slightly stoned look
• sideways “scheming” eyes adding personality
• a curved cap with halftone dots on the underside
• simplified shapes that remain clear even at small sizes

The result is a character that feels playful, slightly rebellious, and instantly recognizable.

The Wordmark

The custom wordmark builds on the geometric structure of Allotrope Variable. Each letter was individually warped and slightly tilted backward, creating a subtle sense of motion and attitude. The typography appears stacked in two centered lines:

A recurring framing element appears across the identity system:

x GROW x

The word “GROW” is consistently framed by two X markers – appearing in the main logo, wordmark lockup, and badge version. Bold outlines and a slight dimensional treatment give the typography presence while keeping the mark highly legible across different applications.

Logo System

The identity was designed as a flexible logo system.

The main logo combines the raccoon icon with the stacked wordmark. The character appears to peek over the lettering, with small hands resting on the top edge — as if observing from behind a wall. A secondary badge version restructures the mark into a circular composition. NOCTURNAL curves above the raccoon, while x GROW x sits below in a mirrored arc.

Both versions maintain the same typographic treatment and visual balance, allowing the brand to adapt easily across packaging, apparel, and digital environments.

Color

The color palette was derived directly from a photograph of one of the client’s plants. Using Illustrator’s Object Mosaic tool, the image was translated into a simplified color grid. From this grid, the brand palette was extracted. This method ensured the palette stayed visually connected to the plant world while still supporting the client’s goal of creating a premium-feeling product line.

Typography

The typography balances expressive headlines with a clean and structured foundation.

For headlines and titles, Bananas VF Extrabold Condensed is used. Its bold condensed proportions create strong visual impact while reinforcing the graphic energy of the brand.

Supporting elements use Allotrope Variable, creating a flexible typographic system across the identity. Subheadlines are set in Allotrope Variable Bold, adding structure and hierarchy without competing with the expressive headline type. For longer text and supporting information, Allotrope Variable Regular ensures readability across packaging, digital applications, and product information.

This combination allows the brand to move between playful character and clear communication — balancing attitude with usability.

Packaging

The visual identity extends into product packaging for nutrient pouches. A halftone gradient pattern connects the brand backgrounds and introduces subtle visual movement across the packaging surface.

The front panel features:
• the main logo
• product name and functional labeling
• supporting claims 

This structure keeps the packaging clean and readable while allowing the character to remain the focal point.

Applications

The identity was designed to live comfortably across both product packaging and lifestyle applications. The raccoon character and badge logo translate naturally onto apparel and merchandise:

• hoodies
• T-shirts
• trucker caps
• skateboards
• digital storefronts

Each application reinforces the brand’s playful but confident tone. Whether printed on packaging or worn as streetwear, the identity remains instantly recognizable.
